Unidentified gunmen yesterday invaded the Akwa Ibom State Police Marine Base in Oron and carted away several ammunition.
The gunmen suspected to be militants were said to have stormed the police base yesterday afternoon in a commando style shooting sporadically and scaring away traders.
Witnesses told LEADERSHIP that police men on duty at the base took to their heels on hearing the heavy gun fire just as fishermen, traders and other artisans in the vicinity also fled.
One of the witnesses who preferred anonymity told LEADERSHIP that the security men who were supposed to repel the attack but abandoned their duty post had been detained.
When contacted, the public relations officer of the state police command, Mr. Etim Dickson confirmed but said the exact number of ammunition carted away was yet to be ascertained.
He added that it was a mob action and the police were yet to make any arrest but that the matter was being investigated, even as assured the people of the of the area of their safety.
