The Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Prince Enobong Uwah, has declared the support of the teeming real Uyo people for the State Governor, Chief Dr Godswill Obot Akpabio.
Commissioner Uwah made this assertion as part of his remarks during the grand finale of Hon. Enobong Uwah’s Unity football Competition for Uyo Local Government organized by his umbrella socio-political organization, Uyo Senatorial District Progressives Initiative, USPI, which also fielded a team in the competition.
In the final match witnessed by thousands of Sports enthusiasts, associates and members of another foremost political group, Akwa Ibom Consolidation Assembly, on Sunday 20th April 2014 at Secondary School Ikot Oku Uboh Offot along Abak road adjacent Federal Secretariat, Uyo by 3pm, USPI and Ward 7 football teams locked horns, with Ward 7 emerging victorious by a lone goal.
A Total of 12 teams participated in the tournament but most teams were eliminated in the first & second round.
The first semi final was between Uyo Senatorial District Progressives Initiative( USPI) team & Ward 4 and the second semi final was played between Ward 6 and ward 7.
Both ended in penalty shoot-outs in favour of USPI and Ward 7 respectively.
Hence, the grand final which held on Sunday 20th April 2014 to mark d Easter celebrations.
The match which held promises from the very beginning proved to be very interesting because of the quality of players, attractive prizes and caliber of guests that graced the event such as the cup donor, Commissioner Uwah, his Youth and Sport counterpart, Hon. Monday Uko, commissioner for Health, Dr Emem Bassey and other Government functionaries and party chieftains.
Commissioner Uwah reiterated the position of Uyo people as far as their support for Governor Akpabio led administration is concerned and thanked the governor for the many good things he has done for Uyo.
He assured that, Uyo people are now different and have changed course to rally behind Governor Akpabio.
While congratulating the competing teams, officials and Local Organizing Committee for the high sense of discipline, fair play and sportsmanship they have displayed throughout the tourney, Commissioner Uwah maintained that, this was the reason why he initiated and chose to sponsor the competition so that are youths can engage their talents meaningfully, develop themselves and learn the virtues of hardwork and spirit of sportsmanship.
He congratulated the champions and charged them to remain focused, stay of drug abuse, violence and other social vices, while putting their trust in God almighty to see them through.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Monday Uko, lauded the effort of Prince Enobong Uwah for undertaking the venture and commended him for keying into the Uncommon Transformation Agenda of the Governor in the area of sports development.
He disclosed that the Ministry was simultaneously scouting the competition for talents and assured that, some bright prospects will soon be invited to the State based teams to showcase their skills.
He also pledged the total support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports for such events which seek to meaningfully engage the vast potential of the youths.
High point of the event was a side show by members of Akwa Ibom Consolidation Assembly, Uyo Chapter who restated their support for power shift to Eket Senatorial District and the induction of Prince Enobong Uwah as an Honourary member for the Super Eagles Supporters Club of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, by her South South Vice President, Mr Justice Udousoroh.
